Define your goals
The number one thing when starting a blog, or anything, for that matter, is defining your goal. When you set yourself a goal you’ll get an inner motivation that will keep you going. Because you don’t want to disappoint yourself. That’s in human nature.
But don’t just set any goal, set a SMART goal.
If you’re not familiar with the SMART acronym, it stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound.
When you set a smart goal you are more likely to achieve it. Let me give you an example to demonstrate.
Here are two goals: “start a successful blog” and “reach 10k pageviews in 5 months”
Let’s analyze them!
Is 1st goal specific? No. measurable? No. Achievable? Maybe, but, again, what does that successful mean?! Is it realistic? Again, there is no enough information. Time-bound? No.
Now, let’s look at the 2nd goal. Is it specific? aka is it clear? Yes, it is. Measurable? Yes, it’s 10k pageviews. Achievable? I’d say it is. Realistic? Yes, it is. And lastly, is it time-bound? Yes, 5 months is the set time.
See what I’m saying? In order to reach a goal it has to have all these things so you can make it a reality, so you know what exactly you’re trying to do. What you’re trying to reach.
Now that you’ve set your goal it’s realization time. Which brings us to 2nd point
Have a plan
Write down your goal. What does it take to reach it? What, exactly, do you have to do to get there? Write down how you’re going to reach it, step-by-step.
Break down your goal into smaller goals so it’s easier to reach it.
Define your target audience
Who are you writing for? Who do you want to read your blog? What are their interests?
Define your “ideal” reader and focus on them. Create content for them.
Think of your readers and what questions and concerns they have.
And then create content that will help solve those problems and answer those questions.
Because you are not writing your blog for yourself.
You are writing it for your readers.
Unless, of course, you’re just starting a blog for fun.
But if you have any intention of turning it into a business, you have to treat it like one.
You need to create content for your readers, not yourself.
Do some research
Now that you’ve set your goal and created a plan on how to reach it. And defined your target audience it’s time to do some research.
Find a list of most popular blogs in your niche and stalk their blogs and social media (in a non-creepy, totally normal, way). See what kinda content they post, what kinda content is most popular on their blogs. Use that information when planning your content
I know when you’re starting a blog you may feel like you have to be on every single social media. But, honestly, that is the worst thing you could be doing.
Focus on 1-2 at a time. Work on building a strong following on those social media platforms before moving onto others.
Which platforms you’re gonna focus on first depends on your niche and your goals. If you’re starting a fashion blog focus on Instagram first, if you’re starting a mommy blog focus on Pinterest and Facebook.
Research your niche to figure out which social media would be most suitable for you.
