I don’t have any tricks or secrets (sorry to disappoint you ) that will get you to 1000 Instagram followers in 24h or something.
Because that’s not how it goes.
Sorry to break it to you but if you want to grow your Instagram account you’re gonna have to put the work in.
Growing your account takes time and dedication.
Are you ready to do some work and reach your first 1000 followers on Instagram?
Then let’s get started!
How to get your first 1000 followers on Instagram
Post good quality photos
First things first, if you want to get more followers on Instagram you NEED to post good quality pictures.
Yes, this is very obvious and you’ve probably heard it 100000 times before but I needed to mention it.
Because, even though it’s SO obvious, people often forget about it and ignore it…
Instagram is a VISUAL platform!
The photos you post are the main reason people will follow you.
People follow people because they like their content.
It’s simple as that!
(unless it’s your friend or a celebrity but even then, you follow them because you like and want to see what they post)
So before you go and apply ANY of the other tips, work on your content.
Look at your content and see where you can improve, how you can make it better.
Create sharable content
Speaking of content, you don’t want to create some random content only you care about.
If you want to get more followers and for more people to find you, you need to create sharable content.
Create content people will find value in and want to share.
It can be content that will inspire people, teach them something, make them laugh, etc.
Think of your target audience and what they come to your account for.
What kind of value you can offer them.
And then create content FOR them (not for yourself! )
Create content your followers are most interested in.
And how do you know what that is?
By looking at your Instagram insights or other analytics tools.
Pay attention to your insights to see which posts get the most engagement (especially shares and saves! ) and create more similar content.
Getting your posts shared is one of the best ways to get in front of more people and gain new followers.
When someone shares one of your posts, their followers see it and they might visit your account and decide to follow you.
If your content is great but you’re posting every leap year people won’t follow you.
Or if they do, they will soon unfollow when they realise you haven’t posted anything in months.
Another reason why you should be consistent is because of Instagram’s algorithm.
(I have a full post about the Instagram algorithm and how it works, you can check it out HERE if you want to find out more about it and how to beat it)
Instagram loves when you show up and spend time on the app, post content.
The algorithm loves and rewards consistency.
How often should I post?
Okay, I need to be consistent but what does that mean? How often should I post?
Well, there is no “right” answer.
The truth is, that it’s different for everyone.
Some people post multiple times a day while others 2x a week.
Just try things out and see what works best for you.
Most importantly, find a schedule you can keep up with long-term.
But what I would say it to post AT LEAST once a week.
Use hashtags to get noticed on Instagram
You think you can just add some random hashtags to your captions and that you’ll magically get hundreds of likes and followers?
I’m sorry to break it to you but that’s not how things work.
You need to do a research and find THE best possible hashtags for you.
Don’t worry, it’s not as complicated as it sounds.
Here is how you can find hashtags to use:
- go to explore page and type in a general hashtag (in your niche) and click on it, on top of the page you’ll see some related hashtags you can use
- or go to a profile of somebody who posts similar content as you and see what hashtags they use
Now that you found a hashtag you could use you need to see if it would work for you.
To do this look at the top posts in that hashtag and see:
- the type of photos that are in the top
- how many likes the top posts have
- how many comments they have
If you post similar content and the number of likes/comments you receive on your posts is similar to theirs you have a shot to be in the top posts.
That is the type of hashtag you should be using.
Use hashtags where your posts have a chance to be seen by the RIGHT people.
That’s why I said to search for hashtags in your niche aka hashtags that are related to content you post.
I do have a full post about hashtags you can check out HERE where I share even more tips that can help you pick the best hashtags and use them to grow your account.
Create a hashtag library
To make things faster and easier for you, create a hashtag library of all the hashtags you can use on your posts.
The best place to do it is in your notes app so you can easily copy and paste them when posting a new photo.
One thing I need to point out is to NOT use the same hashtags over and over again.
Change up your hashtags as Instagram doesn’t like when you use the same ones on every picture.
Another thing that could help you get more followers is by being reposted by a brand.
So always tag brands in your posts, whether it’s the clothes you’re wearing or the food you’re eating, tag the brand.
(don’t forget about InstaStories as well, tag brands there as well)
As you never know what can happen.
Being reposted by a brand is a great way for you to be exposed to a lot of new people.
Some of those people might like your picture and decide to follow you.
Engage with people in your niche
You need to give in order to receive.
Which means that you need to follow other people who post similar content as you, like their posts, leave comments.
Instagram is a social media after all.
Take some time every day (at least 10 minutes) to go and engage with other people.
You can find people by searching one of the hashtags you used in your posts and then just spend a few minutes going through the hashtag and engaging with posts you like.
When leaving comments, leave a genuine and meaningful comment.
Read the caption, think of what you’re going to write.
Don’t just comment “nice photo” or even worse just an emoji ????
Actually take the time and write a real comment.
Promote your Instagram on other platforms
Another great way to get your Instagram in front of more people is to promote it on other platforms.
You can share your photos on Pinterest. And when people see your photo on Pinterest and click on it they will be taken to your Instagram account. (I have lots of helpful Pinterest posts that can help you to get your photos in front of more people)
If you have a Youtube channel put your Instagram URL in your video descriptions and mention your username in your videos. Encourage your subscribers to follow you on Instagram.
Or if you have a blog put your Instagram link in your sidebar and mention in your posts.
You can also promote your Instagram profile on Twitter. Add your Instagram link to your Twitter bio. And use a tool like IFTTT to automatically publish your Instagram posts on Twitter.
Track your progress
And finally, don’t forget to track your progress.
Pay attention to your analytics to see what’s working and what isn’t.
What time of the day your posts get the most engagement? What type of photos perform best? What hashtags work best for you?
Knowing these things can help you reach 1 000 Instagram followers a lot faster and help you understand your existing audience.
How do I track my progress?
You can track your progress with
- Instagram’s insights
- or use an analytics tool
To have access to Instagram’s insights you need to have a business account.
To convert your personal account to a business one go to your profile > settings > account > switch to business account.
With a business account, you have access to Instagram’s insights where you can see how many impressions/likes/comments all your posts and stories had, see how many profiles visits or website clicks you had. You can find out where your followers are from, how old they are and so much more.
You can also go to each photo you posted and see insights specifically for that post and see how many saves and shares it got, how many people actually saw your photo and how they found it.
And so many other helpful things.
On the screenshot, you can see how Instagram’s insights for a specific post look like.
Use an analytics tool
Another great way to track your Instagram progress is to use an analytics tool.
There are so many tools and apps out there but my favourite is the Preview App.
Preview App is actually a feed planner (would totally recommend it for planning your feed btw) but it also has an amazing analytics feature.
You can find out how engaged your audience is, what best times to post are, what your top posts are and so much more.
My favourite thing about the Preview App is their hashtag tools.
You can search for hashtags by category or country and then just add them to hashtag groups.
You can also see what your best-performing hashtags are, which ones got you most likes, comments etc which is SO helpful!
I always look at my hashtag analytics when creating a new post to see which ones would be best for that photo!
If you really want to up your hashtag game I’d definitely recommend downloading the Preview App as their hashtag tools will help you so much!
Plus, all other features are very helpful as well.
